Aquaponik verbindet eine Wasserersparnis von mehr als 90 Prozent mit Controlled Environment Agriculture und macht Wasser dadurch zu einem kontrollierten Bestandteil des Produktionssystems.</strong><br><br>Wassermangel zeigt sich nicht nur in ausgetrockneten Böden und niedrigen Pegelständen. Er wird zunehmend zu einem wirtschaftlichen Problem. Landwirtschaft, Trinkwasserversorgung, Industrie, Energieerzeugung und Schifffahrt sind auf ausreichend verfügbares Wasser angewiesen. Wird es über längere Zeit trocken, geraten diese Nutzungen regional immer stärker unter Druck.</p>



<p>Deutschland ist bislang nicht flächendeckend von Wassermangel betroffen. Allerdings bestehen erhebliche regionale und saisonale Unterschiede. Für die Landwirtschaft ist entscheidend, ob Wasser <strong>am jeweiligen Standort und genau dann verfügbar ist, wenn Pflanzen es benötigen</strong>. Das Umweltbundesamt weist darauf hin, dass sich diese Unterschiede in den trockenen Jahren seit 2018 deutlich gezeigt haben und durch den Klimawandel weiter verschärft werden. [1.]<br><br>Für die Landwirtschaft wird Wasser damit immer häufiger zum begrenzenden Produktionsfaktor. Bleiben Niederschläge während wichtiger Wachstumsphasen aus und trocknet der durchwurzelte Boden aus, können Pflanzen ihr Ertragspotenzial nicht ausschöpfen. Zusätzliche Hitze erhöht zugleich die Verdunstung und den Wasserbedarf. Das Joint Research Centre der Europäischen Kommission berichtete im Juli 2026, dass anhaltende Wasserdefizite und Hitzestress in Teilen West- und Mitteleuropas bereits verbreitete Schäden an landwirtschaftlichen Kulturen verursacht haben. <p>Die Folgen sind auf den Feldern sichtbar: Pflanzen reduzieren ihr Wachstum, Blätter welken oder sterben ab, Erträge werden unsicherer. Bewässerung kann solche Situationen teilweise auffangen. Sie setzt jedoch voraus, dass Wasser überhaupt verfügbar ist, entnommen werden darf und mit vertretbarem Aufwand auf die Fläche gebracht werden kann.</p>



<p>Damit verändert sich eine grundlegende Voraussetzung landwirtschaftlicher Produktion: Wasser kann nicht länger überall als jederzeit verfügbare Hintergrundressource betrachtet werden. Es wird selbst zu einem Faktor, nach dem Produktionssysteme geplant und bewertet werden müssen.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Landwirtschaft verliert Wasser aus dem Produktionssystem</h2>



<p></p>



<p>Im klassischen Pflanzenbau gelangt Wasser durch Niederschlag oder Bewässerung in ein offenes Produktionssystem. Nur ein Teil steht den Pflanzen tatsächlich zur Verfügung; weiteres Wasser verdunstet, versickert in tiefere Bodenschichten oder fließt oberflächlich ab.</p>



<p>Diese Verluste sind nicht vollständig vermeidbar und gehören zu offenen landwirtschaftlichen Systemen. Problematisch werden sie dort, wo Wasser knapper wird und gleichzeitig die Verdunstung durch höhere Temperaturen zunimmt. Dann reicht es nicht mehr aus, nur zusätzliche Wassermengen bereitzustellen. Entscheidend wird, wie effizient das vorhandene Wasser für die Pflanzenproduktion genutzt wird.</p>



<p>Auch Nährstoffe verlassen solche offenen Systeme. Sie können mit dem Wasser verlagert, ausgewaschen oder in Bodenschichten transportiert werden, in denen sie für die Pflanzen nur noch eingeschränkt verfügbar sind. Wasser- und Nährstoffmanagement lassen sich deshalb nicht voneinander trennen.</p>



<p>Das bedeutet nicht, dass Freilandwirtschaft grundsätzlich ersetzt werden kann oder sollte. Getreide, Grünland, Feldfrüchte und viele andere Kulturen werden auch künftig auf großen Flächen produziert werden. Aber dort, wo hohe Erträge auf kleiner Fläche, eine verlässliche Produktion oder ein besonders sparsamer Umgang mit Wasser gefragt sind, stoßen offene Systeme zunehmend an Grenzen.</p>



<p>Genau hier beginnt der Wechsel zu <strong>Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) concept.</strong>. In kontrollierten Produktionssystemen werden Wasser, Nährstoffe, Temperatur und weitere Wachstumsbedingungen nicht nur beobachtet, sondern gezielt gesteuert. <strong>Wasser wird damit von einem äußeren, nur begrenzt steuerbaren Faktor zu einem planbaren Bestandteil des Produktionssystems.</strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Aquaponik führt Wasser im Kreislauf</h2>



<p></p>



<p>Aquaponik ist eine Form der <strong>Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) concept.</strong>. Sie verbindet eine Kreislauf-Aquakultur mit einer erdlosen Pflanzenproduktion, meist in einem Gewächshaus oder einer anderen kontrollierten Produktionsumgebung. Wasser wird dabei nicht nach einmaliger Nutzung aus dem System abgegeben, sondern zwischen Fischhaltung, Wasseraufbereitung und Pflanzenproduktion im Kreislauf geführt.</p>



<p>In der Aquakultur erhalten die Fische ihre Nährstoffe über das Futter. Einen Teil davon nutzen sie für Wachstum und Stoffwechsel; ein weiterer Teil gelangt über ihre Ausscheidungen in das Wasser. Nach einer mechanischen und biologischen Aufbereitung wird dieses Wasser für die Versorgung der Pflanzen genutzt. Die Pflanzen entziehen ihm Wasser und Nährstoffe; anschließend kann es zur Aquakultur zurückgeführt werden.</p>



<p>Frischwasser wird benötigt, um die Mengen zu ersetzen, die das System tatsächlich verlassen. Dazu zählen insbesondere Transpiration und Verdunstung sowie technisch oder betrieblich bedingte Verluste.</p>



<p>Dadurch kann Aquaponik gegenüber konventionellen landwirtschaftlichen Produktionsformen <strong>bis zu 90 Prozent Wasser einsparen</strong>. Die genaue Einsparung hängt vom Standort, vom Klima, von den angebauten Kulturen, der technischen Auslegung und dem jeweils gewählten Vergleichssystem ab. Die FAO nennt für integrierte Aquaponiksysteme Einsparungen von bis zu 90 Prozent; einzelne Systeme benötigen täglich nur wenige Prozent der insgesamt zirkulierenden Wassermenge als Nachfüllwasser. <p>Der entscheidende Vorteil liegt jedoch nicht allein im geringeren Wasserverbrauch. Mit dem Wechsel zu CEA verändert sich die Rolle des Wassers im gesamten Produktionsprozess. Seine Verfügbarkeit hängt nicht mehr davon ab, ob es während der Wachstumsphase ausreichend regnet, wie viel Wasser der Boden speichern kann oder ob eine großflächige Bewässerung möglich ist.</p>



<p>Wasser wird stattdessen zu einem kontrollierten und wiederholt genutzten Betriebsmittel. Seine Menge und Qualität können erfasst, überwacht und an die Anforderungen von Fischen und Pflanzen angepasst werden. Damit verschwindet der Wasserbedarf nicht. Aber Wasser verliert weitgehend seine Rolle als <strong>unkontrollierbarer Flaschenhals</strong> der Pflanzenproduktion.</p>



<p>Aquaponik schafft so eine Produktionsumgebung, in der auch bei anhaltender Trockenheit verlässlich weiterproduziert werden kann – vorausgesetzt, die vergleichsweise geringe Menge an erforderlichem Nachfüllwasser steht zur Verfügung. Genau darin liegt der Unterschied zwischen bloßer Bewässerung und einem kontrollierten Kreislaufsystem.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wasser und Nährstoffe gemeinsam denken</h2>

<p>Aquaponik spart nicht nur Wasser. Sie verbindet zugleich die Nährstoffkreisläufe von Fischhaltung und Pflanzenproduktion.</p>



<p>Ein Teil der im Fischfutter enthaltenen Nährstoffe gelangt über Ausscheidungen und nicht verwertete Futterbestandteile in das Wasser. Nach der Aufbereitung stehen diese Nährstoffe der Pflanzenproduktion zur Verfügung. Vor allem Stickstoff und Phosphor stammen damit direkt oder indirekt aus dem Fischfutter.</p>



<p>Je nach Pflanzenart, Fischbesatz, Futter und technischer Auslegung müssen einzelne Nährstoffe ergänzt werden, etwa Kalium, Calcium, Magnesium oder Eisen. Die Pflanzenernährung beruht jedoch nicht vollständig auf separat eingebrachten Düngemitteln. Ein wesentlicher Teil entsteht bereits innerhalb des gekoppelten Systems.</p>



<p>Damit werden zwei Aufgaben miteinander verbunden, die in getrennten Produktionsformen unabhängig voneinander gelöst werden müssten: In der Aquakultur müssen Nährstoffe aus dem Wasser entfernt werden, während sie im Pflanzenbau bereitgestellt werden müssen. In der Aquaponik wird aus dem einen Prozess ein Eingangsstoff für den anderen.</p>



<p>Gerade unter Bedingungen knapper werdender Ressourcen ist diese Kopplung entscheidend. Aquaponik reduziert nicht nur den Wasserbedarf, sondern auch den Bedarf an zusätzlich eingebrachten Nährstoffen und kann Nährstoffverluste in die Umwelt begrenzen. Ihre Stärke liegt deshalb nicht in einer einzelnen Einsparung, sondern in der Verbindung mehrerer Stoffströme zu einem kontrollierten Kreislauf.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Wo Aquaponik besonders sinnvoll ist</h2>



<p></p>



<p>Aquaponik ist nicht für jede Kultur, jeden Standort und jede Form der Landwirtschaft die passende Lösung. Ihre Vorteile werden vor allem dort wirksam, wo mehrere Anforderungen gleichzeitig zusammenkommen.</p>



<p>Besonders interessant ist sie an Standorten, an denen Wasser nur begrenzt verfügbar ist oder saisonal knapp wird. Da der überwiegende Teil des Wassers im System verbleibt, lässt sich auch mit vergleichsweise kleinen Nachspeisemengen eine kontinuierliche Produktion aufrechterhalten.</p>



<p>Aquaponik kann außerdem dort sinnvoll sein, wo nur wenig Fläche zur Verfügung steht. Auf begrenzter Grundfläche lassen sich Fisch- und Pflanzenproduktion miteinander verbinden. Das macht sie unter anderem für kleinere landwirtschaftliche Betriebe, urbane Räume oder Regionen mit hohen Bodenpreisen interessant.</p>



<p>Auch nutzbare Abwärme kann ein wichtiger Standortvorteil sein. Wärme aus Biogasanlagen oder industriellen Prozessen lässt sich für Gewächshaus und Aquakultur einsetzen und damit in einen zusätzlichen Betriebszweig einbinden.</p>



<p>Aquaponik eignet sich außerdem für Regionen, in denen Lebensmittel möglichst nah am Absatzmarkt produziert werden sollen. Gewächshauskulturen und Fisch können ganzjährig oder saisonal für Direktvermarktung, regionale Gastronomie, Handel oder Gemeinschaftsverpflegung erzeugt werden. Kurze Wege und eine planbare Produktion erleichtern dabei die Abstimmung mit konkreten Abnehmern.</p>



<p>Besonders sinnvoll wird Aquaponik deshalb häufig nicht durch einen einzelnen Vorteil, sondern durch die Verbindung mehrerer Standortfaktoren:</p>

<p>Ob eine Anlage wirtschaftlich und technisch sinnvoll ist, hängt von der konkreten Kombination dieser Faktoren ab. Aquaponik ist kein Standardprodukt, das unabhängig vom Standort funktioniert. Sie ist ein Produktionssystem, dessen Stärke gerade darin liegt, vorhandene Ressourcen und lokale Anforderungen miteinander zu verbinden. <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Keine Notfallmaßnahme, sondern resiliente Infrastruktur</h2>

<p>Aquaponik sollte nicht erst dann interessant werden, wenn Wasser bereits akut fehlt, Ernten ausfallen oder Lieferketten unter Druck geraten. Solche Anlagen benötigen Planung, Genehmigungen, Technik, Fachwissen, Absatzwege und einen eingespielten Betrieb.</p>



<p>Ihr Wert liegt deshalb vor allem in der <strong>vorsorgenden Anpassung</strong>. Aquaponik schafft Produktionskapazitäten, die gegenüber Trockenperioden, schwankenden Niederschlägen und begrenzten Bewässerungsmöglichkeiten deutlich weniger empfindlich sind als offene Anbausysteme. Gleichzeitig lassen sich Fisch und Gemüse regional und näher an Verbrauchern, Gastronomie und Handel produzieren.</p>



<p>Aquaponik kann das Ernährungssystem damit um einen Produktionszweig ergänzen, der Wasser effizient nutzt, Erträge planbarer macht und mehrere Stoffströme miteinander verbindet.</p>



<p>Gerade deshalb sollte Aquaponik nicht nur als technische Speziallösung oder außergewöhnliches Nachhaltigkeitsprojekt betrachtet werden. Sie ist eine Form kontrollierter Lebensmittelproduktion, die auf Bedingungen vorbereitet ist, unter denen Wasser nicht mehr selbstverständlich jederzeit und überall verfügbar ist.</p>



<p>Die entscheidende Frage lautet daher nicht erst: &#8222;Was tun wir, wenn das Wasser knapp wird?&#8220;</p>



<p>Sondern bereits heute: Welche Produktionssysteme funktionieren auch dann noch zuverlässig, wenn Trockenheit, Hitze und Nutzungskonflikte zunehmen?</p>



<p>Aquaponik ist darauf keine universelle Antwort. Aber sie ist eine konkrete, bereits verfügbare Möglichkeit, Wasserknappheit in der Planung landwirtschaftlicher Produktion systematisch zu berücksichtigen.</p>

As early as the end of June, crops in many areas are already experiencing heat stress, even before the peak of summer has arrived. Plants close their stomata, photosynthesis is reduced, <b>growth and yield </b>come under increasing pressure.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">This clearly demonstrates how vulnerable open-field agricultural production can be. Heat, drought, heavy rainfall, hail, and severe wind gusts do not occur in isolation, but often during brief, extreme weather episodes.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">For agricultural businesses, horticultural enterprises, and regional food systems, the question therefore arises: <b>How can production become more stable, predictable, and resilient in the future?</b></span></p>								</div>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">When the long-awaited cooling finally arrives, it often comes in the form of heat-induced thunderstorms. While they do bring rain, they frequently also deliver heavy downpours, hail, and severe wind gusts. From the perspective of crop production, however, heavy rain does not constitute reliable irrigation; large volumes of water strike the ground in a short space of time, falling on soil with limited absorption capacity following periods of heat and drought.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">The result is problematic: water runs off the surface, soil erodes, nutrients are washed out, and plants only benefit to a limited extent from the precipitation. If hail and wind are added, crops can be directly damaged. The urgently needed cooling then becomes an irrigation lottery with a damage bonus.</span></p>
<p class="p3"><span class="s1">The more frequently such extreme weather events occur throughout the year, the greater the challenge for cultivation becomes. The number of hot days in Germany is increasing over the long term. While the national average was 4.2 hot days per summer during the 1961–1990 period, this figure rose to 8.9 days between 1991 and 2020. These are defined as days with a maximum temperature of at least 30°C. [1.]</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">However, this long-term trend describes only part of the dynamic. Recent heatwaves, in particular, demonstrate how early, how prolonged, and how severe such episodes can now be. During the heatwave of June 2026, the German Weather Service (DWD) noted that the period of heat warnings—expected to last twelve days—could rank among the longest since the heat warning system was introduced. At the time of writing, the final climatological assessment of this heatwave is still pending. [2.]</span></p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">One possible answer lies not in replacing traditional agriculture, but in supplementing it with protected and controllable production systems. Internationally, the term <b>Controlled Environment Agriculture</b>or short <b>CEA</b>is frequently used</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">This refers to cultivation systems in which climate, water, nutrients, and growing conditions can be precisely controlled. These include modern greenhouses, hydroponic systems, vertical farming concepts, and aquaponic facilities.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Such CEA systems create a production environment that is much easier to control. Heat, drought, heavy rain, hail, and wind no longer directly affect the crops; instead, their impact is buffered by the building envelope, climate control systems, water management, and technical equipment.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Furthermore, production conditions can be maintained largely within optimal parameters, which prevents damage and not only secures but also can help to increase yields.</span></p>								</div>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">A common misconception is that it gets even hotter inside a greenhouse. After all, there was a reason greenhouses were historically referred to as "hothouses." However, this image does not do justice to modern commercial greenhouses.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Modern greenhouses are designed to maintain crops within a productive temperature and light range. In addition to controlled ventilation, energy and shading screens can be used to precisely regulate solar radiation, temperature, and light availability. Active or passive cooling can also play a role.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">In open Greenhouses so called <b>pad-and-fan-Systems</b> are used. In this process, outside air is drawn through moistened cooling pads, lowering the air temperature. In other concepts, supply air can be mechanically cooled—for instance, using heat pumps in reverse mode or other cooling systems.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Temperature control is also a crucial factor in aquaculture. Depending on the fish species or production goal, water parameters must be maintained within strict limits. For trout, for instance, low water temperature plays a key role, whereas other species tolerate higher temperatures. The decisive point is that production is not left to the weather but is actively managed.</span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Another significant advantage of protected production systems lies in the protection of the crops. Extreme events can, of course, also damage greenhouses. A tornado or an exceptionally severe storm cannot simply be planned away. However, modern greenhouses can be equipped (with tempered safety glass) in such a way that they withstand <b>hailstorms</b> grain sizes of up to approximately 3 cm in diameter (HW 3), depending on the design and glazing. </span></p>
<p class="p1"><span class="s1">However, the most important characteristic of CEA lies in the continuous supply of the plants. Water and nutrients are not provided haphazardly through precipitation but are supplied in a controlled manner. This makes it possible to significantly reduce drought stress, nutrient deficiencies, and extreme fluctuations.</span></p>								</div>

<p>On 3 June 2026, the German Federal Cabinet adopted an <strong>action programme to implement the National Circular Economy Strategy [1]</strong> Its aim is to conserve resources, protect the environment and make Germany less dependent on raw material imports.

The programme includes, among other things, a platform for relevant stakeholders, investment and innovation funding, digital product passports, AI applications for circular economy and resource efficiency, and the further development of the legal framework.</p>
<p>This is an important step. In times of uncertain supply chains, rising raw material prices and growing geopolitical dependencies, circular economy is not only environmental policy. It is also industrial policy, raw material policy and innovation policy.</p>
<p>Yet when people talk about circular economy, many first think of recycling centres, metals, plastics, batteries or building materials. This is understandable, because technical material cycles are central to industry, infrastructure and resource security.</p>
<p>But circular economy does not begin with recycling. It begins with the question of how materials move through production systems in the first place — and whether they end up as waste or become the basis for the next process.</p>								</div>

									<h2 data-heading="Was sagt die Kreislaufwirtschaftsstrategie?">What does the Circular Economy Strategy say?</h2>

<p>The National Circular Economy Strategy does not understand circular economy solely as an environmental programme, but also as a contribution to raw material security, stronger supply chains, competitiveness and the resilience of Germany as a business location.</p>
<p>The aim is to reduce the consumption of primary raw materials, close material cycles and keep materials in the economic system for as long as possible.</p>
<p>To achieve this, the strategy relies on several levers: investment and innovation funding, digital product passports, circular industrial data spaces, AI applications, stronger public procurement of circular products and the further development of the legal framework. Another important component is the planned Circular Economy Platform. This platform is intended to bring together the federal government, the federal states and municipalities, business, civil society, culture and science on a regular basis in order to support and further develop the implementation of the strategy.</p>
<p>For the time being, the programme primarily addresses technical cycles. Materials are to be used for longer, reused, repaired, recycled or recovered as secondary raw materials. This is important and correct.</p>
<p>At the same time, the legal definition in the German Circular Economy Act already shows how strongly the term has so far been shaped by waste legislation. Section 3 paragraph 19 states: “Circular economy within the meaning of this Act means the prevention and recovery of waste.” For a comprehensive circular economy, however, this perspective is not enough. Biological cycles do not begin with waste.

They begin where nutrients, water, energy and biomass are guided through a production system.</p>

<h2 data-heading="Die Natur kennt keinen Abfall">Nature knows no waste</h2>
<p><!-- obsidian --></p>
<p>In natural ecosystems, there is no waste in the true sense. What is a residual substance for one organism becomes a resource for the next. Plants, animals, fungi, microorganisms and bacteria do not form linear production chains, but metabolic relationships.</p>
<p>Leaves fall and decompose. Microorganisms make nutrients available. Plants take up these nutrients again. Animals eat plants or other animals. Excretions, dead biomass and organic residues become part of the system once more.

From this perspective, circular economy is not a new principle. It is a basic pattern of life.</p>
<p>Modern industry is now trying to redesign technical systems according to this principle. Products should no longer be disposed of after single use, but kept within material cycles. In agriculture, however, this principle is much closer at hand. Agriculture has always worked with biological resource flows: water, nutrients, biomass, feed, manure, soil life, plant growth and animal production.</p>
<p>That is why agriculture is predestined for circular economy.</p>
<h2>Where circular economy was originally at home</h2>

<p>Historically, agricultural farms were more closely embedded in local cycles. Plant residues, manure, compost, feed, bedding and soil fertility were directly connected. A farm was never a completely closed system, but many material flows remained within the farm or the region.</p>
<p>With specialisation, intensification and globalised supply chains, many of these relationships have been dissolved or outsourced. Feed comes from outside. Fertiliser is produced industrially or transported over long distances. Animal husbandry, crop production, energy production and nutrient management are often separated from one another.</p>
<p>This creates high productivity, but also new dependencies and losses.</p>
<p>In open-field cultivation, nutrient losses can never be completely avoided. Rain, soil structure, weather, leaching and biological processes mean that material flows cannot be fully controlled. This is not the fault of individual farms. It is a property of open systems.</p>

<h2>Aquaponics makes nutrient flows visible</h2>
<p><!-- obsidian --></p>
<p>Aquaponics combines aquaculture and plant production in a coupled system. Fish are fed and grow. Their excretions enter the water. Microorganisms convert these substances into nutrients available to plants. The plants take up the nutrients. The purified water is returned to the aquaculture system [2].</p>
<p>What is a burden or waste in a linear system becomes the basis for new production within the cycle.</p>
<p>Aquaponics thus makes visible nutrient flows that often remain hidden in other systems. The nitrogen cycle is no longer an abstract biological process, but becomes a technical and operational reality: feed becomes fish growth, fish metabolism becomes plant nutrient, plant nutrient becomes vegetables, herbs or lettuce.</p>
<p>Those who understand material flows begin to think differently about agriculture. It is no longer only about individual products, but about relationships: between water and nutrients, between fish and plants, between microorganisms and yield, between input and output.</p>

<h2>Aquaponics as a starting point for coupled cycles</h2>
<p><br />Aquaponics initially describes the cycle between fish, bacteria and plants. But it does not end there. It becomes a revolving door to further cycles.</p>
<p>Plant residues can serve as input for additional biological processes. Insect larvae can utilise organic residues and turn them into protein-rich biomass. This biomass can in turn be integrated into feed streams. Poultry can become part of adjacent material flows. Chicken manure can enter biogas processes or, after appropriate treatment, once again be considered a nutrient source. Rainwater can reduce water demand. Waste heat from a biogas combined heat and power plant can temper aquaculture and plant production and provide the electricity required.</p>
<p>The cycles shown in the illustration are not a pure vision of the future. Many of these material-flow connections already exist today in research, practice or neighbouring agricultural systems. What matters is not that every system contains all modules. What matters is which resource flows can be meaningfully connected on site.</p>
<p>Aquaponics creates a productive core cycle. From there, further modules can be connected: insect larvae, poultry, biogas, fungi, composting, vermiculture or other forms of biological utilisation. A production system becomes a circular architecture.</p>

<h2 data-heading="Aus Rohstoffen werden Stoffströme">From raw materials to resource flows</h2>

<p>The more consistently cycles are considered, the more unnecessary the terms “waste” and “raw material” become, because plant residues contain biomass. Fish excretions are no longer a burden, but nutrient carriers. Heat is not waste heat. It is a usable energy flow. Rainwater is a resource and organic residues are not a disposal problem, but potential inputs.

What remains are resource flows moving through the system in different forms.</p>
<p>This is the actual meaning of biological circular economy. It designs the system in such a way that materials remain usable.</p>

<h2>Circular economy means resilience</h2>

<p>Every locally closed cycle reduces dependencies. When nutrients are kept within the system, the need for external inputs decreases. When water is used multiple times, production becomes less dependent on dry periods. When waste heat is used meaningfully, new value creation potential emerges. When organic residues are further utilised, additional production pathways arise.</p>
<p>Circular economy is not only an ecological idea. It is also a strategy for more robust farms, regional value creation and reduced dependence on complex supply chains.</p>
<p>This applies in particular to agricultural businesses looking for new sources of income, better use of existing infrastructure or more intelligent ways to connect heat, biomass, water and nutrients.</p>

<h2>From aquaponics to the productive biotope</h2>
<p><!-- obsidian --></p>
<p>Aquaponics is not the only form of biological circular economy. But it is a particularly vivid starting point.</p>
<p>It shows how closely production, metabolism and system design are connected. It makes visible that circular economy does not begin at the recycling centre, but wherever nutrients, water, energy and biomass are kept within the system.</p>
<p>The next step leads from aquaponics to multiaquaponics and further towards the productive biotope: systems in which different organisms, production areas and material flows are connected. We have already described such a productive biotope with 12 modules here [3].</p>
<p>The question, therefore, is not whether biological circular economy is possible.<br />The question is how consistently we want to use it.</p>
<p>The future of circular economy lies not only in the recycling of materials, but also in the intelligent use of biological cycles. Aquaponics shows how water, nutrients, biomass and energy can be connected to form productive resource flows — not as a contradiction to agriculture, but as a further development of its oldest strength.<br /><br /></p>

<p>In Germany, around 50 hectares of land are currently being newly used every day for settlement and transport purposes [1]. Many of these areas are often no longer available for agriculture in their previous form. For farms that cannot simply expand indefinitely, the question of creating new value on smaller areas is becoming increasingly important.</p>

<p>How can the remaining land be used more intensively? What role can existing buildings, heat, water and regional sales channels play? And when is it worth looking at production systems that do not depend on many hectares of arable land?

This is precisely where <strong>Aquaponics </strong>comes in<strong>.</strong></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">When land is no longer enough</h2>

<p>Even if a farm wants to grow, the land does not grow with it. Leased land is scarce, purchase prices are high, and where agricultural land is converted into residential areas, commercial areas, roads or compensation areas, the land available for agricultural use becomes smaller.</p>

<p>It becomes particularly difficult when a farm continues to exist, but the available land is no longer sufficient for conventional arable farming. Then the question is no longer only how many hectares can be cultivated, but how the existing farmstead can remain economically viable.</p>

<p>Can the farm be used more productively? Are there buildings, heat sources, water, paved areas, regional sales channels or existing customer relationships that could be used for a new branch of business? And can this become a form of agriculture that requires less land but creates more value per square metre?</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">From hectares to value per square metre</h2>

<p>Conventional arable farming thinks in hectares. That makes sense as long as enough land is available. But when land becomes scarce, the question changes: what kind of value creation is possible on the land that remains?</p>

<p>For small farms, part-time farms or farm successors, this change in perspective can be decisive. An area that is not attractive for conventional arable farming can take on a completely different meaning as greenhouse space, with protected cultivation and coupled production.

This can also include side areas that have so far only been mown.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why existing buildings can be interesting</h2>

<p>Many farms have buildings that are no longer optimally used for their original purpose: old stables, halls, storage areas or paved farmyards. Such existing structures can become a starting point for new utilisation concepts.</p>

<p>However, caution is needed. Not every building is automatically suitable for aquaponics or protected cultivation. That is precisely why the first step should not be the construction of a system, but a professional assessment of the possibilities.</p>

<p>Aquaponics is not a simple standard solution. But for certain farms, it can be an option worth examining — especially when farmsteads, small areas and existing infrastructure are to be used in a new way.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For years, we have been calculating and planning aquaponics systems of various sizes and configurations as part of feasibility studies. Now we would like to offer interested parties the opportunity to use our aquaponics calculator to roughly estimate the costs of their own projects with just a few details.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">We need to move beyond the "rough estimate".</h2>



<p>Often, prospective clients ask us for "just a very rough estimate" to get an idea of ​​whether an aquaponics project can be economically viable and how high the investment would be. It's perfectly understandable that an initial idea doesn't immediately translate into the willingness to commission a costly preliminary planning phase, including a feasibility study. </p>



<p>The disadvantage, from our perspective, was that—regardless of how precise the assessment needed to be—we always had to ask the same questions and perform the same calculations. Unfortunately, we couldn't omit any factor; we had to complete all the assumptions to be able to make any statements about investment costs and profitability. A little bit of calculation simply isn't possible. For this reason, we wanted to provide an easily accessible tool that allows for an initial assessment without significant investment.<br></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Aquaponics should become more well-known</h2>



<p>Last but not least, even after our company was founded over 10 years ago, we still face the problem that very few people are even familiar with aquaponics as a form of circular economy. This often applies to people who are deeply involved with sustainability and environmental protection and who show particular interest in aquaponics. We also frequently contact people who can't implement their own aquaponics project but are so enthusiastic about the idea that they ask how aquaponics could be promoted in their communities.</p>



<p>But it's not the horticulturalists, the farmers, or the biogas plant operators who are the primary targets, even though the prospects for profitability increase dramatically with the use of waste heat. Our goal is not only to raise awareness of aquaponics itself, but also to reach those already working in agriculture and horticulture.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The economic viability of aquaponics projects should become more widely known.</h2>



<p>Another reason why we make an online version of our aquaponics calculator publicly available is that many people still believe such a project isn't worthwhile and can only be operated with ongoing subsidies. This is partly based on the experiences of the few projects that have been implemented so far. However, these were often too small to allow for any economies of scale. <br>However, since the profitability of agriculture and horticulture depends on the available land, projects have often been conceived on too small a scale. The effects of economies of scale also become very clear when calculated with the calculator.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">We want to showcase the many possibilities of aquaponics</h2>



<p>But aquaponics isn't just interesting for investors, farmers, or horticulturalists. There are situations where even an aquaponics system of just 500 square meters can be economically viable. For example, with seasonal cultivation in an inexpensive, lightweight greenhouse with double-layered foil and a passive thermal storage system (as a heat wall). This also makes it interesting for projects by citizen initiatives, community-supported agriculture (CSA), or cooperatives. However, we've received very few inquiries from these groups so far, as it's currently almost impossible for them to get a realistic assessment of the topic.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Disadvantage of aquaponics: It is complex</h2>



<p>And that brings us to the real disadvantage of aquaponics, especially regarding large-scale projects. It's so complex that even experienced mathematicians with an agricultural background struggle to assess a project's economic viability. The dual use of fish feed as a nutrient source for both fish and plants defies any rough calculation, as nutrient turnover is subject to complex biological processes. Furthermore, the knowledge about the conditions for raising fish and plants in a closed system is currently divided between two separate industries that have had little interaction. And that's what we want to change.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Advantage of aquaponics: It makes operators capable of taking action.</h2>



<p>However, in our view, the advantages of aquaponics outweigh the disadvantages. Besides its sustainability, the comparatively simple implementation of plant cultivation in soilless conditions is particularly compelling. It can become a kind of food insurance policy and simultaneously represent an economically attractive additional source of income.</p>



<p>For those seeking greater independence from complex supply chains, rising energy prices, or fertilizer costs, aquaponics offers an approach that addresses several challenges simultaneously. And as logistics and fertilizers become more expensive, aquaponics becomes increasingly competitive.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What happens next</h2>



<p>We will continue to develop the web application for the aquaponics calculator in the coming months. The goal is to gradually integrate additional functions from our internal application and continuously expand the calculator, for example, to also calculate the heating of the system using waste heat. At the same time, we are eager to see how the tool is used and what feedback we receive. We will also find out whether the server will be able to handle the load or if we will need to upgrade it. Since the calculations are complex, we will be closely monitoring the situation and may need to make adjustments. 										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>How wonderful to see all the familiar faces of our Kenyan partners from the Living Lab at Egerton University in Nakuru, Kenya, in the photos, and many new ones who are also there. We are following the current situation from afar and are impressed by the enthusiasm with which our partners have embraced aquaponics and insect larvae production (BSF).</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Background</h2>



<p>According to the EU funded project <a href="https://incitis-food.eu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">INCiTiS-FOOD</a> we spent three intensive weeks at Egerton University in september 2023, conducting a workshop on trainer training. One of the participants was Sila Ooko Owiti. Today he is Lead Innovator at Rongai Teachers Training College.</p>



<p>What followed the workshop is a good example of what we call remote capacity building. The exchange of knowledge didn't end with the workshops. Rather, it continues through regular communication via messenger, photos, and drawings. And so we remain closely connected to what's happening.</p>



<p>INCiTiS-FOOD includes a so-called cascading fund that supports local farmers in building their own facilities. Applicants could apply for funding to put their knowledge of aquaponics into practice.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Team Rongai Teachers Training College celebrates topping-out ceremony</h2>



<p>Silas' team succeeded in seizing this opportunity, and soon after, construction began on two large aquaponics systems, each with greenhouses covering an area of ​​approximately 400 square meters, using A-frame (NFT) systems for the Rongai Teachers Training College and the farmers of the Jua Farm Umoja Youth Group. In the future, the aquaponics system will be supplemented with the breeding of black soldier flies to further close the nutrient cycle.</p>



<p>And today the topping-out ceremony for the new facility at Rongai Teachers Training College took place. <br>Congratulations to the entire team and of course to Sila!</p>
